The Book Thief Book Club

Domino pieces are called bones and when you play dominoes you draw from the boneyard. Rudy and his sisters play dominoes and watch them fall. On page 410, Kurt, Rudy's brother, says, "They look like dead bodies." How are the dominoes on the book's cover symbolic of the Holocaust and World War II?
After nineteen wonderfully insightful comments on the dominoes, I am more interested to hear from the others about the rest of the symbolism in this novel. What other symbols are used in the story? Can you explain them as fantastically as the other folks explained the symbolism of the dominoes and the Holocaust and WWII? I can't wait to read your entries!

Free Speech

Free Speech: What exactly is it? What can you do and what can you not do in the USA? What would you be willing to tolerate under the guise of free speech? As always, it helps to give specific examples. Please be sure to comment directly on other bloggers comments. Directly address them in your post. Also, it's always intellectually honest to change your position on an issue after thinking through another person's point of view. Even better, it is okay to communicate that growth in your post.

Blogging 101

Hello Advanced Studies Language Arts students,
Welcome to our class weblog. For the first weblog assignment, you will need to pick one of the Blogging 101 topics and make one entry on one topic. You may write more if you so desire. Blogging is somewhat similar to the "write around" we completed during class last week; however, blogging involves reflection on other's posts as well as your own personal observations and thinkings. Due date is by 7:30 am December 2, 2008. Please follow the guidelines as stated in the class handout. All comments must be approved by your teacher so check back later to see them posted!

Sincerely,
Mrs. G
